The Bhagavad Gita encapsulates foundational spiritual truths and explores their interrelationships, specifically emphasizing the nature of Krishna, the individual soul, the material universe, action, and time. It offers clear insights into consciousness, the self, and universal principles — representing the essence of Indian spiritual tradition.

As a segment of the fifth Veda—composed by Vedavyasa and included in the Mahabharata—the Gita was first revealed during the Battle of Kurukshetra by Lord Krishna to Arjuna. It is a 700-verse text that addresses a spectrum of philosophical and ethical questions through a dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna.

The Bhagavad Gita has garnered numerous commentaries over centuries, from early interpretations by Adi Sankara in the eighth century CE to contemporary analyses. Its setting on the battlefield is widely understood as an allegory for moral and ethical dilemmas faced in human life. The scripture’s call for selfless action has inspired many leaders in India’s independence movement, including Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who famously called it his "spiritual dictionary."
